Why you DON'T want to grow your business

Think you want your business to grow?

You might want to think again...

I recently conducted a poll on LinkedIn where I asked people if they wanted their business to grow or to scale. Here were the results:

I wasn't surprised.

See, a lot of people confuse growth with scaling. And I don't want you to be one of those people.

Here's the difference between growth and scaling and why that difference is important.

Growth means increasing revenue while also increasing costs and resources.

If I gave you a million dollars to spend, could you grow your business? You most certainly could.

You could hire the world's best sales team. You could buy somebody's book of business. Heck, you could take out an ad at the Superbowl!

These and countless other ideas would almost certainly result in "growth". That is, increased revenue. But would you actually make more than you spent? Would you turn a profit? That's less certain.

Scaling means increasing revenue without incurring significant costs.

It means being able to invest a little and getting a lot more back for your money.

I think what trips people up about scaling is that it tends to conjure up an image of a graph shaped like a hockey stick. They think it means that you have to be on a path to become some gigantic company.

Scaling isn't about the hockey stick. It's about the environment that allows for the hockey stick.

Scaling is about predictability. It's about consistency. It's about control.

Scaling is knowing that if you do a certain set of actions, there is an expected outcome from those actions that's greater than what you put in.

And when you have that recipe for specific action = desired outcome, you have a lot of power. Because you get to choose your desired outcome and know exactly how to get there - whether that's hockey stick growth or simply a steady and reliable business.

That's what I love about doing what I do. Giving business owners the power to decide their future and the tools to know exactly how to get there.

So I'll ask again, which do you want for your business? Guessing and hoping, or predictability and control?

Big investments for unsure results, or sure investments for big results?
